Graphical User Interface
The graphical user interface is a subset of the user interface. A good GUI can make programs easier to use. GUIs can be used in computers hand-held devices such as MP3 players, portable media player or gaming devices, household appliances and office equipment. Two of the most popular operating systems Windows and Mac OS are based. The first commercial Graphical User Interface is Xerox's Star workstation, introduced in 1981. The major advantage of GUI is easier to learn and use because GUI makes computer operation more intuitive.

Design Rules

A Graphical User Interface normally contains a lot of action elements that are realized with buttons. Since buttons are mainly decorated with button graphics we listed you a few design rules for these graphics.
  •  The icon must identify clearly the action of the button.
  •  The drawing style should be kept symbolic.
  •  The action, state, or mode that a button initiates should be clearly shown.

 User's Attention 

User's Attention There are several techniques to get the user's attention:
  • Animation
  • Colors
  • Sound
  • Graphic Adornments

GUI Controls

The design of a GUI should be User-Centered. That means that the needs, wants, and limitations of the end user of an interface are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process. A GUI exists of four groups of GUI controls:
  • Input Elements
  • Output Elements
  • Selection Elements
  • Action Elements

 Error Messages

Error messages should be there to help the user. One of the error message types is shown in Figure 1
  • polite 
  • concise 
  • consistent 
  • constructive 
  • appropriate to user’s skill level 
  • accurate 
  • informative 
  • appropriate to setting

Progress Indicator / Waiting Screen

  • Waiting is the most frustrating part of any user experience
  • Providing a good progress indicator helps to elevate this pain and it should be:

 - dynamic: confirms that something is happening

 - informative: how much is remaining/ has been done

One of the waiting screen types is shown in Figure 2. This is a game and it can be played when you connect to the internet.

Signal Processing - Digital Signal Processing

Digital signal processing (DSP) Digital signal processing (DSP) is concerned with representation of signals as numbers and processing of these sequences. DSP has fixed processing characteristics, i.e. they are independent of the external factors of the environment at that moment.
