                                                     Introduction of Drum



Gata beraya known as Kandyan Bera traditionally been used in the Kandyan (up country) dance. Figure 1 show parts of the drum.

2    Kapumhama
3    Bera Kanda
4    Wam Asa
5    Dakunu Asa
6    Kanwaraya
7    Weniwara Karalla
8    Warapata

There are two sides of the drum called Wam asa and Dakunu asa. Right side (Dakuny asa) of the drum is covered with the skin of a Monkey while the opening on the other side (Wam asa) is covered with a Cattle skin. For this reason, there are different sounds from each other. Figure 2  shows one side of the drum.

There are five basic lessons to learn called basic acres "Thath" ,"Jith", "Thon","Nan","Tha" for beginners. "Jith" and "Nan"  lessons and sounds from the right side of the drum and "Thath", "Thon" and  "Tha" lessons and sounds from the left side of the drum.

 Three ways to play the drum called Madya Laya, Drutha Laya and Thutha Laya Respectively low speed, normal speed and high speed.

Signal Smoothing: Rectangular Boxcar Algorthim

This algorithm is more like an average function moving along a particular signal to mean out the signals in order to reduce the noise. Therefore it's well known as the Moving Average Filter. As the name says the the filer operates by averaging a number of points from the input signal to produce each point of the siganl.  Here, x[ ] - is the input signal y[ ] - is the output signal M   - is the number of points in average. Ironically the algorithm is very simple scientists and engineers are not fond of the it although it is the first to be called when it is time to for a signal to be smoothed and being very good for many aplications. Plus it removes random white noise optimally. The biggest advantage of being such a simple algorithm is that it is very fast to use as an recursive function.
